A Sequel to The War Zone

The War Zone , Black Swan edition. Very excited to be working on a sequel to The War Zone , my novel about incest, abuse and social breakdown. I'm feeling really invigorated, fired up and ready to go. It's not a book explicitly about the barbarians at the gate, but that definitely helps fuel the journey the new novel is about. And it's not about forgiveness either. Some things can't be forgiven (although it will be far more c omplex than that). When my wife, Charong, first suggested writing the sequel late last year, I realized how much I wanted to revisit my characters in a new time and with a different focus. In their way, I love them all (well, perhaps not the father) and life and time and experience, both mine and many others', have given me a whole new drive and vision.  The War Zone 20th Anniversary Edition , also on Kindle. Yesterday, I received exceptionally helpful notes (many pages, an account not just notes) from Rosie,  one of

Merry Christmas To All...And To All A Good Night!

A Christmas version of Tim Roth and me by Nath Alie. As our children prepare for bed, super excited about what tonight will bring, I offer my Christmas and holiday wishes to everyone, together with this fun seasonal reworking of a photograph of Tim Roth and me, created by Nath Alie , who runs The War Zone Message Board for survivors of abuse. While I am drawn most to Buddhism (I feel it is a way of experiencing the world, rather than a particular kind of belief), I love this time of year more than any other in terms of the magic in the air, and I still feel a childlike and perhaps primal thrill around the winter green of Christmas trees and colored lights. Wishing warmth, happiness and love to all, and peace and harmony to our beautiful planet. Merry Christmas to all...and to all a good night! (Tim, of course, will be seen this Christmas in Quentin Tarantino's new blockbuster, The Hateful Eight .)

Apocalypse Now - My Life

As I write today, I'm thinking about the first time I saw Francis Ford Coppola's truly extraordinary Apocalypse Now - at a preview of its original release - and the unbelievable thrill of hearing the sound of the chopper blades moving around the cinema, and the extraordinary, hallucinogenic flow of images that washed across the screen - and a narrative that was both visionary and experimental, yet grounded in fabulous storytelling - with, of course, a powerful element at its core of Joseph Conrad's already remarkable The Heart of Darkness. Along with Nicolas Roeg's Performance and certain other films, Apocalypse Now was one of the movies that cemented both my belief that cinema could be GREAT and mind-challenging and provocative and enjoyable and thrilling beyond belief - and BEAUTIFUL - and also one of the movies that made me want to make movies, to aspire to make something as great and as fearless - it certainly was in my mind (there's a direct refere
